Biology and Chemistry Teacher
Winchester Thurston School, a PreK-Grade 12 independent school, announces a search for an Upper School Biology Teacher and Upper School Chemistry Teacher, two key roles in the science department’s curricular enhancement, as part of a rigorous college preparatory science program beginning in fall 2010. Candidates with the appropriate level of experience may also be considered for PK-12 Science Department Chair. Winchester Thurston (WT) seeks to forge connections with the dynamic resources of the region, which is emerging as a leader in green technology, urban sustainability, and environmental science.

POSITION OVERVIEW

  • Teach 4 sections of Upper School Biology or Chemistry and serve as an advisor.
  • Plan lessons that are in accord with departmental curriculum and the School’s educational philosophy.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for and commitment to the school's City as Our Campus initiative by actively seeking meaningful community connections for experiential learning opportunities within and outside the classroom. Use varied methods of instruction and assessment.
  • Work on curriculum revision and program development with other teachers in the department and the Upper School Director.
  • Commit to ongoing professional growth through personal research; attending conferences and workshops; visiting other classes and schools; and integrating new skills, such as the use of technology in the classroom.
  • Work as a team member with teaching colleagues and administrators.
  • Create and maintain an appropriate classroom environment and help enforce school rules.
  • Communicate with parents in an effective and timely manner.
  • Attend all department meetings, Upper School faculty meetings, and in-service days, and serve on committees as needed.
  • Fulfill duties that are connected with non-academic responsibilities, i.e. taking attendance, covering study halls and other assigned duties, etc.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Applicants for the Upper School Biology or Chemistry positions must have the following credentials:

  • Bachelors degree in Biology or Chemistry
  • Educational philosophy consistent with that of the School

Preference will be given to candidates with the following credentials:

  • Masters degree and 3 or more years of teaching experience
  • The ability to lead or assist in one or more of the School’s extra-curricular programs

Candidates wishing to be considered for the Department Chair must have the following credentials:

  • Bachelors and Masters degree in Biology/Chemistry and 5 or more years of teaching experience
  • Forward-thinking and entrepreneurial disposition, passion for the City as Our Campus initiative, and ability to inspire others in the pursuit of new opportunities
